- Better sound quality: DAB signals are digital, which means that they are not subject to the same interference as FM signals. This results in a clearer, more consistent sound quality.
- More choice of stations: DAB allows for a wider range of stations to be broadcast than FM. This means that listeners will have more choice of programming, including local, national, and international stations.
- The ability to receive radio on a wider range of devices: DAB signals can be received on a variety of devices, including radios, smartphones, and tablets. This makes it easier for listeners to enjoy their favorite radio stations wherever they are.
Digital Radio UK is working with the government and broadcasters to ensure that the switchover from FM to DAB is smooth and successful. The switchover is expected to begin in 2020 and be completed by 2030.
Why is the switchover to DAB necessary?
The switchover to DAB is necessary because the FM band is becoming increasingly congested. As more and more devices use the FM band, the quality of the signal can suffer. DAB is a more efficient use of the spectrum, which means that it can provide a better quality of service.
In addition, DAB offers a number of other advantages over FM, including:
- It is more resistant to interference: DAB signals are digital, which means that they are not subject to the same interference as FM signals. This results in a clearer, more consistent sound quality.
- It provides more choice of stations: DAB allows for a wider range of stations to be broadcast than FM. This means that listeners will have more choice of programming, including local, national, and international stations.
- It is more convenient: DAB signals can be received on a variety of devices, including radios, smartphones, and tablets. This makes it easier for listeners to enjoy their favorite radio stations wherever they are.
